How many cloth diapers do we need? A simple guide to get started

So, you’ve decided to give cloth nappies a go—amazing!

Now you’re probably wondering, How many do I actually need?

Don’t worry, you’re not alone. No one expects new parents to magically know the answer to this. In fact, most first-time parents are shocked by the sheer amount of stuff that comes out of such a tiny human.

That’s why we’re here—to make things simple and help you get started with confidence!

The number of cloth nappies you need depends on a few key factors:

  • Newborns (0-3 months): Typically require 10-12 nappy changes daily.

  • Infants (3-12 months): Usually need 8-10 changes per day.

  • Toddlers (12 months and older): Often need 6-8 changes daily.

Newborns go through a lot of nappies—think of it as a rite of passage. As they grow, they’ll need fewer changes, which means your stash can stretch further.

The more nappies you have, the less often you need to wash. A common practice is washing every 2-3 days. Here’s a rough guide:

  • Washing daily? You can get by with 12-15 nappies.

  • Washing every other day17-20 nappies is ideal (especially for newborns).

  • Washing every 3 days? 30-35 nappies ensures you always have fresh ones ready.

Not everyone uses cloth nappies full-time, and that’s okay! Here’s a breakdown:

  • Full-time use: You’ll need around 24-36 nappies.

  • Part-time use: 12-18 nappies can work well.

  • Just trying it out? Start with a trial pack to see if cloth nappies fit your lifestyle.
