Debunking Myths! *Washing Cloth Nappies is Difficult*
Cloth nappies can seem daunting to some, but once you get the hang of it, they’re incredibly easy to manage. Many parents worry about the washing process, but let me assure you: it’s not as complicated as it sounds!
In fact, with just a few simple steps and some good practices, washing cloth nappies can become second nature.
The Secret Lies in Simplicity
First things first: washing cloth nappies doesn’t have to be time-consuming or difficult. With the right routine and tools, you’ll be able to keep your nappies clean and fresh with minimal effort.
Cleaning your cloth nappies is straightforward with our recommended four-step process:
REMOVE SOLIDS
After use, dispose of any solid waste into the toilet. This initial step helps prevent stains and makes subsequent cleaning more effective.

*After tipping solids into the toilet, a silicone brush can help remove any excess during a quick rinse. This keeps nappies cleaner and odor-free before storing them in the dry pail.
DRY PAIL STORAGE
Rinse the soiled nappy briefly in the laundry sink to remove residual waste. Then, place it in a dry pail—a ventilated bucket designed for cloth nappy storage. This method minimizes odors and bacterial growth.
*A dry pail is a ventilated bucket or basket for storing cloth nappies before washing. It helps simplify the process, reduces washes, and prevents odors. Just ensure it has holes for airflow, pick a size that suits you, and place it in your laundry for easy rinse-and-throw storage!
PRE-RINSE & MAIN WASH
At the end of each day (or the start of each morning), run a quick pre-rinse cycle in your washing machine with the collected nappies. After the pre-rinse, perform a main wash, (can be every 2-3 days or according to the number of nappies you have on hand), add your inserts to your machines longest (warm <60*C) wash cycle with the full amount of detergent needed for a heavily soiled load and water level.
*Avoid detergents containing fragrances, perfumes, fabric softeners, or chlorine bleaches, as these can affect the nappies' absorbency and durability.
Covers should be washed separately as they should not exceed 40*C as the integrity of the PUL and elastic could be compromised. The wash can always be bulked up with your normal washing. See our Cleaning FAQ's below for more detailed washing information.
DRYING
After washing, air drying is recommended to maintain the integrity of the nappy materials. Hang the nappies in the sun, as sunlight acts as a natural disinfectant and helps control odors. If air drying isn't feasible, you can use a tumble dryer on a low heat setting, but be cautious, as high heat can damage the fabrics over time.
By following these steps, you'll keep your cloth nappies clean, fresh, and in excellent condition for your little one.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Using Too Much Detergent: This can lead to buildup, irritation, and ineffective washing. A little goes a long way!
-
Overheating: High temperatures can damage the fibers and elastic. Stick to warm or cool washes.
-
Ignoring Stains: Deal with stains early to prevent them from setting. A quick soak can save you a lot of hassle.
Detergents and Tips for Proper Drying
-
Detergent Recommendations: Choose a fragrance-free, eco-friendly detergent without fabric softeners or bleach. Some popular options for cloth nappies are Charlie’s Soap, Rockin' Green, or Molly’s Suds.
-
Drying Tips: If you have access to a clothesline, hang your nappies outside to take advantage of the sun’s natural disinfecting properties. If you’re using a dryer, opt for low heat and consider using dryer balls to help fluff up the fabric.
